Prelone Review

Prelone (active substance prednisolone) belongs to the drug class called cortisonics. Cortisonics are anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs. The most important fields of application for Prelone are:
• Rheumatic disease, bronchial asthma, hay fever, serum sickness, hypersensitivity to medicaments and other allergic reactions;
• Urticaria, generalized eczema, dermatitis, disseminated erythematodes, dermatomyositis, pemphigus, exfoliative dermatitis;
• Agranulocytosis, thrombopenia, acquired hemolytic anemia, myeloblastosis, lymphadenosis, lymphogranulomatosis;
• Hepatitis, ulcerative colitis, adrenogenital syndrome, nephrotic syndrome.

Recommended use of Prelone

In general, treatment begins with relatively high doses that are reduced during treatment. After the success of the initial treatment phase, the daily dose is gradually reduced to the minimum dose required to obtain a satisfactory result.

In bronchial asthma and in allergic diseases initial doses between 16-40 mg a day are recommended, while the maintenance dose is mostly 4-16 mg a day. In light cases of chronic polyarthritis, 8-16 mg may suffice to start therapy, but in severe cases, however, 16-40 mg is required. The daily dose of 4-16 mg is sufficient to maintain therapeutic success.

Acute rheumatic fever requires, according to the most recent experiences, high doses of steroids. For this reason the daily dose of 40-80-120 mg (in children under 14, 1.2-1.6 mg / kg of body weight) should be administered until the erythrocyte sedimentation rate has remained normal at least one week; then the dosage is gradually decreased.

The tablets should not be ingested on an empty stomach; the breakdown of the dose during the day and the duration of the therapy are left to the judgment of the doctor who will decide, as in any glucocorticoid therapy, based on the severity of the morbid condition and the different response of the patients to the treatment.

Precautionary measures

Due to the risk of intestinal perforations with peritonitis, Prelone should only be used if actually needed and by adequately monitoring patients with:
• severe ulcerative colitis with risk of perforation, abscesses or purulent inflammation;
• diverticulitis;
• recent intestinal anastomoses.

Unless they have already had chickenpox, children and adults should avoid contact with people with chicken pox or shingles.
Patients exposed to such infections while taking Prelone should contact a doctor immediately even without symptoms.
Patients with tuberculin reactivity should be monitored due to the risk of reactivation.

Side effects

Prelone may provoke side effects that tend to disappear with continued use, are dose-dependent and occur only in a fraction of patients. The most important side effects of Prelone are: nausea, skin problems (acne), menstrual cycle changes, swelling, body hair growth, flatulence and other.
But these symptoms can be controlled. You must tell your doctor about any side symptoms you feel. In case of side effects complication, you need to reduce the dose or change the treatment regimen
